FAQ’s

Commercial and Residential

"How do you charge for your services?"

We charge a fixed fee for our design services based on the scope of work of your project and our estimate for how long it will take us to get to a design you love and that functions perfectly for your space. Unlike some other designers we don't work off hourly rates because we know that having budget certainty is important. This way you know the cost for the design work upfront and can factor this cost into your budget planning from the start. We have a minimum level of engagement set at £10,000 for our full design tender package.

"How do I pay? Do you require a deposit?"

We charge in instalments based upon the stages of the process, and require a 50% deposit of the concept stage to secure the project's position in the studio’s schedule, before commencing any design or development work.
For procurement, we require funds upfront, in instalments, dictated by the build’s schedule, to cover purchasing on the clients behalf. We act as an agent with our suppliers, on behalf of the client. The Schedule of Procurement is shared with our clients regularly and is updated as we make any purchases or amendments.

“What does the interior design process entail?”

The interior design process typically begins with an initial consultation to discuss your needs, preferences, and budget to form a brief. From there, we create, then develop a design concept, scheme, floor plans, elevations and detailed drawings and renderings. Along with this we will select furnishings, lighting, flooring and finishes, whilst managing the procurement and installation process, We can also provide final styling touches to bring the space together.

“Can you help me determine the investment required for my project?”

We work closely with you to establish a realistic budget based on the scope of the project, your desired level of customisation, and the quality of materials and furnishings you prefer. Transparency is key, and we strive to ensure that your budget aligns with your vision for your home.

"Do you have builders you can recommend?"

We collaborate with a number of trusted contractors that we are happy to recommend. We like to work with contractors that we have built up a rapport with, as this often gives us a shortcut for a more seamless build. However, we will happily liaise with our clients preferred choice of builder should they have their own.

“I notice you specialise in sustainable design. What does this mean to you and how does it affect your choice of clients”

Sustainable design is all about creating spaces that consider the health of the people that use them, as well as their environments and the planet as a whole. For too long, the concept of designing brand new schemes from scratch, using up planet Earth's virgin resources whilst sending the used and waste materials to landfill, has gone unchallenged. Thankfully, the design industry as a whole has really taken note over the last 5 years or so and is working really hard to take all the steps necessary to become part of the solution rather than part of the problem. As designers we take our role in this very seriously and do all we can to ensure that we always keep sustainability at the forefront of all our design making decisions and principles. Therefore, we seek to work with and welcome like minded clients who place the same value on sustainable, biophilic design as we do.

“Can you incorporate sustainable or eco-friendly design elements into my home?”

We will always integrate sustainable materials, energy-efficient fixtures, and eco-friendly design practices into your home where possible, to minimise environmental impact and promote healthy living

"Do you have a signature style?"

We describe our style as 'contemporary eclectic'. Eclectic to us is about being open, inclusive, accessible & diverse, with both style & ideas, taking inspiration from all around us. At studio ATARA, we approach each design project with a unique perspective, combining a fresh, open mindset with a keenly tailored design sensibility. Paired with contemporary sustainable design principles, we offer cohesive, space enhancing, interesting & pragmatic designs. Creating captivating environments that not only meet the functional needs of your business or home but also honours its distinctive character and/or brand. Whilst always keeping biophilic sustainability at the forefront of all our design making decisions, ideas and principles.

However, we always embrace our client's vision, and like to work ‘with’ them, rather than dictate a particular design sensibility or give them 'paint by numbers' design. It is our intention to give a client their own individual space to live, in a way that truly reflects them and their lifestyle.

"How long does each stage take?"

This is obviously a tricky one to quantify, as the scope of each individual project will vary. As an approximation though: Concept stage 4 weeks; Development stage 6 weeks; To collate all elements for the final tender package often takes a further 2-3 weeks which includes compiling the final schedule for the start of build. Whilst this final drawing package goes out to tender, we begin sourcing the initial items for around 4 weeks, depending on the quantity of items required and the start of the build programme. The procurement phase continues during build as elements evolve & develop. To be considered, feedback times from our clients play a part in the time each phase takes also. As a result, we include required feedback times from our clients in our T&Cs to ensure all runs as smoothly as possible.

"Do you charge for an initial consultation?”

Once you have made contact with us and returned the initial questionnaire, we will arrange a discovery call during which we listen to you to find out more about your residential project in order to gain a clearer understanding of the project itself and the scope. This also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have and to decide if you would like to work with us! The next step would be for us to arrange a site visit to the property, which is chargeable. This helps us to get a feel for the space and so we can discuss your vision and requirements face to face. Following this, we will then be able to draw up a fee proposal and present it to you for your consideration. If you are happy to proceed and appoint us as your designers on your project, this initial chargeable site visit will be refunded.

"I've never used an interior designer before. Where is the value in using one?"

Our training and hands-on experience in the industry have given us the skills to engineer the best use of space through pragmatic, clever & creative space planning and bespoke design detailing. We spend time observing good design around us, conceiving original ideas, combining colours & finishes that work together based upon individual briefs.

We execute technical drawings for contractors to work from clearly & efficiently, and specify & list all of the jobs for tender to get accurate, broken down quotes from contractors. To be of further help, we can take contractors around your property and compare the quotes with you. We have many years of experience with on-site design management, leading contractors on site through the design & structure and dealing with any issues that may arise during the build.

Managing your budget through a procurement schedule ensures you get the most for your money with organised timing of ordering as and when it is needed on site. Clients also benefit from our extensive roster of suppliers & the trade discounts they provide us.

"What are you offering that I cannot do myself?"

Our clients in the past have described struggling to put their ideas into practice. Often we are brought in after they have had some ideas themselves that they cannot realise. We pride ourselves in working with clients, drawing and evolving their thoughts, rather than dictating to them.
We have had clients say they are unsure where to start with finding tradespeople. We work with and look for talented, exemplary contractors that work to top end standards. Our computer aided drawings are a clear way to instruct tradespeople along with a comprehensive list of works. We're used to comparing quotes so will ensure you're getting a good deal.
Often we hear of people that have tried to work on their project themselves but find that they are stretched for time and need help & direction to move things along. We are here to give our time to your project.

Where do you source your products for your clients”

We have a wealth of suppliers and manufactures and skilled trades people that we have worked with. We are always researching the latest products and suppliers. As a registered LTD trade company with VAT status, we receive healthy discounts.Depending on your budget, we can focus our sourcing towards high end, bespoke, one off pieces or beautifully curated more affordable items. We will always work within the scope and budget you provide.

"Do we have to take your full bespoke service or can we choose certain elements?"

We try to be as flexible as possible, and are happy for our clients to choose only the stages they require from our full service offers. However, to begin with or if more suitable, we have a range of mid and low tier service offers that might help to introduce you to working with an interior designer and also to our studio’s specific services.

“Can I use my existing furniture and accessories in the new design?”

Absolutely! We understand the sentimental value and practicality of incorporating existing pieces into your new design. We work with you to determine which items can be integrated seamlessly into the design and offer suggestions for updating or repurposing them or others as needed.

“How involved will I be in the design process?”

Your involvement in the design process is crucial to ensuring that we create a space that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations. We welcome your input and although require your timely feedback at each phase of the project, we strive to make the design process collaborative, enjoyable, and stress-free for you.

We communicate openly and transparently with you about any proposed revisions, additional fees to cover these, discuss the potential impact on the project timeline and budget and work together to find solutions that meet your expectations.
