From dark, cramped & hectic family dwelling to sophisticated light, airy home for a family of 4 who needed a better flow of space but also a refreshed style.

Our clients wanted to open up the ground floor of their Arts & Crafts house from the kitchen into the dining & living rooms. We were sympathetic to the original period features in doing so; repairing and continuing the parquet flooring where the dividing wall once was, and tiling the kitchen area where there was previously lino, added sometime ago. We decreased the size of the utility room, giving more room to the kitchen. By planning proper storage and workspace in there, we made the most of a smaller room, far more useful.

The chosen kitchen, tiles & work surface, along with the breakfast bar, were chosen with a bistro style in mind, and a nod to more traditional styles, whilst being fresh and bold.

We brought in the hints of industrial style asked for in the brief, by removing boxing around the steel joist added previously into the kitchen and adding brickwork to the utility wall. By applying cork to the door, the kids artwork has place to be displayed, so it no longer takes over the walls.

In the living area, to enable the room to feel spacious and elegant, we had bespoke storage seating made in the chimney & window alcoves which are neat reading areas for the adults & kids. An eclectic dining set up is the main feature, mixing the industrial & tradition.

The overall feel is grown up, but practical for day-to-day family living.
